MINUTES - D.R.Y.L. Meeting hosted by Farragut SA on December 4, 2007

 

OPENING: Meeting called to order @ 8:10pm. President Jusino introduced Commodore Brian Sproul, who welcomed the DRYL and thanked everyone for coming. Brian announced the Farragut officers who were in attendance and also mentioned the new heating system that was installed and working fine.

ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS: All present except Fleet Surgeon, Harry Borgenson.

ROLL CALL OF COMMITTEE HEADS/ORGANIZATIONS: All present except Bob Grace, Cruise.

ROLL CALL OF CLUBS: 28 clubs present

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes were accepted as published.

 

OFFICERS & COMMITTEE REPORTS

President: President Jusino wished everyone Happy Holidays. Paul Russet, Delaware River Trails, contacted Juice concerning clubs wishing to be shown on the map. Please contact Paul Russet or Juice as more information is needed. Letters of nomination for person of the year and club of the year are due at the next meeting. Juice was in contact with the Commodore of CBYCA to discuss the possibility of a joint meeting of DRYL and CBYCA. Juice also mentioned receiving an e-mail from Boat US concerning the gray water issue – stressed importance of writing letters to congressman. Congress approved an oil-spill committee to oversee the Delaware River and Northern Bay. Juice contacted the Coast Guard about participation on the committee.

1st Vice President: John Maloney – thanked clubs along the river for their hospitality during the summer season.

2nd Vice President: Butch Gricco – no report.

3rd Vice President: Steve Zielinski – no report.

Secretary: Rick Patton – copy of letter sent to Lewis family along with donation.

Audit & Budget: Bill Branchide – no report.

Banquet: Mary Jusino – February 23, 2008 at Canstatters. Dinner choice: Stuffed flounder or prime rib. Will have a DJ. Tickets are $40/pp and will be available at the next meeting.

Cruise: Bob Grace – no report.

Donations – no report.

Fleet Surgeon: Harry Borgenson – no report.

NJ Legislation: John Honer – met with Jason Rodriguez from Joe Roberts’ office – status quo.

Pageant: Toni Nespola – Introduced princesses in attendance. Toni gave financial report for 2007 pageant. Total income of $16,448 less expenses totaling $15,890.06 left net profit of $557.94. Toni mentioned that expenses continue to rise and hopes to increase sales of buttons, shirts and raffle tickets for 2008 to help defray the costs. Finalists for 2007 are: Queen - Leanne Bird, Riverside YC; First Runner Up – Anna Friars, National Park Boat Club; Second Runner Up – Stephanie Zielinski, Neshaminy Harbor Yacht Club; Miss Congeniality was a tie between Erin Maloney, Harbor Light Yacht Club and Anna Friars, National Park Boat Club. Grand prizewinner of basket of cheer was Rob Stewart, Harbor Light Yacht Club, sold by Barb Gricco. 2008 Pageant will be Saturday, August 9th at the Seaport Museum. Pageant meetings will begin in March. See Toni if interested in participating on the committee. Request was submitted to consider changing the age of the participants from 16 through 21 to 16 – 22. After careful consideration, a decision was made to leave the age as it is today…16 – 21.

Picnic: Joe Gricco – no report.

Public Affairs: Bill Garwood – mentioned Senate Bill 2067 which is the companion bill to House Bill 2550, Recreational Boating Act 2007, concerning gray water discharge. Continue to write letters to congressmen and senators.

Regatta: Fred Saunders – no report.

Safe Boating: Ron Blackeby – presented a flyer concerning “Rescue 21”emergency calls to the Coast Guard…How it Works and How to Register. For more information or register your boat, contact www.seatow.com or www.boatus.com

Shoreline Planning: Joe Campbell – Jerry Donofrio met with Commissioner Campbell concerning the clean up of the Camden dump - 14,000 cubic yards will be cleaned up. This will be in conjunction with the Salvation Army Recreation Facility, which will be built on or near this site.

Webmaster: Bryon Campbell – approximately 20,000 hits to the website have been logged (about 1,000 per month). Contents of the 1981 yearbook have been loaded onto the website. Look for new pictures and news items on the website.

Yearbook: Denise Leo – ad forms are now available. There will be additional charges for some items this year. Please submit commercial ads and personal ads as soon as possible.

Boater Voter: Jerry Donofrio – action started by BVC in 1989 concerning clean up of the Delaware River estuaries has resulted in Congressman Andrews helping to secure $3 million devoted to the clean up of the river by the Army Corps of Engineers which provides for cleaning of the river from Trenton to the sea. This led further to mandate a clean up of rivers across the United States under House Resolution Bill 1495.

CBYCA: Bob Williams – CBYCA had its installation of officers. Roster Book being set up…clubs looking to be in book should register on the CBYCA website.

National Boating Federation (NBF): Bob Williams – mentioned that the gray water act was the direct result in the lack of information by the judge who passed the ruling. It is important to see that this ruling gets overturned in a higher court. Continue to send letters or faxes. Faxes are more likely to be read by the legislators. Numbers count so send your position letters to legislators and make the difference. Look on DRYL website and www.boatus.com for names and addresses of legislators.

Pennsylvania Boating Association - SE (PBA): Bill Broadwater – PBA elections were held. New president of PBA SE is Bob Williams; Vice President is Bill Garwood. New officers are looking for rejuvenation and new direction for PBA. Guest speakers are the meeting were Dr. Austin, Dan Martin and Gary Moore.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Second nominations were held and two names were added to the ballot – Jerry Donofrio for President and Brian Sproul for 2nd Vice President. Voting was held for these positions and the results are as follows:

Bill Branchide mentioned a Supreme Court hearing concerning $600 million LNG facility in New Jersey at the Delaware border was rejected…the battle rages on. A decision should be made by June.

 

NEW BUSINESS

·         Anna Friars thanked the DRYL and all persons who donated to the Ryan Lewis fund.

·         Princess Jessica received a full scholarship to college

·         Joe Gricco thanked everyone who helped with the clean up at Harbor Light after a boat fire at the club…especially Juice, JR and Harry Pfyffer.

·         Bryon mentioned that the DRYL will be represented by Paul Jusino on the Oil Spill Advisory Committee

·         $55.54 for supplies to the secretary, Rick Patton

·         $300 to the pageant for Queen travelling expenses to CBYCA Ball.

·         $500 advance for banquet

·         $10.50 to Ron Blackeby for copies – Safety Committee

·         $16.46 bank fees

 

FINANCIAL REPORTS

A motion was made, seconded and approved to pay the bills.

 

GOOD AND WELFARE

·         New Commodore of Happy Hour YC is Ron Patterson

·         Boating education may have prevented 4 deaths that happened on the Delaware Bay this past week.

·         At Wissinoming YC on November 10, 2007, the Commodore and a member witnessed a woman jump off the bridge. They proceeded to take out a boat to rescue her which they did; however, she died on the way to the hospital.

·         Mike Kovacs has a sea map chip for a GPS – see website for details.

·         West End New Year’s party - $35/pp

·         Harbor Lights Commodore’s Banquet – January 26 – call club for details

·         Pennsylvania Yacht Club Commodore’s Banquet – January 12 - $35/pp

·         Next DRYL meeting will be Monday, January 7, 2008 at VFW in Riverside, NJ.
